Endoplasmic is mainly involved in the manufacturing of many important substances and then also packing them. BASIC STRUCTURE OF THE ENDOPLASMIC RETICULUM
Structurally, endoplasmic reticulum is a membranous tubular structure. It is a network of the extensive tube-like membrane that is continuous with the membrane of the nucleus. The structure varies from cell to cell according to the nature of the cell. Most prokaryotic cells or red blood cells do not have endoplasmic reticulum as they are involved in no kind of production of proteins. But some cells such as that of pancreas and livers are very much involved in the production of secretions. So such cells have large amounts of such tubes of the endoplasmic reticulum.
According to the morphology, there are two types of the endoplasmic reticulum. And these types are ROUGH ENDOPLASMIC RETICULUM and SMOOTH ENDOPLASMIC RETICULUM.
The rough endoplasmic reticulum looks bit rough and flat due to attachment of the ribosomes on its membrane. Whereas the smooth endoplasmic reticulum looks smooth tubular tubes with nothing attached on them.
What does SMOOTH ENDOPLASMIC RETICULUM (SER) do?
The SER majorly acts like a storage bank for many secretions and ions. It is majorly involved in the production and storage of the lipids as well as the steroids. These steroids play a vital role in proper functioning of the body. These naturally occurring ring molecules of steroids have a lot to do so that a body remains normal. The sarcoplasmic reticulum is basically a type of smooth endoplasmic reticulum. It acts like a store for the Calcium ions. So when you are engaged in a vigorous exercise such as aerobics, running or skipping your muscles are in a very active state. They need a large number of Calcium ions so that muscles keep working. Here the sarcoplasmic reticulum releases the store of Calcium ions for the muscle. When you tale rest, the sarcoplasmic reticulum gradually and slowly store more of these ions for next time.

What does ROUGH ENDOPLASMIC RETICULUM (RER) do?
The rough endoplasmic reticulum is very important and essential in the manufacturing if the proteins. The rough endoplasmic reticulum is in a direct contact with the nucleus as and it has ribosomes attached on it. As the nuclear manufactures the mRNA, it is expelled out to interact with ribosomes on the rough endoplasmic reticulum. The synthesis of the amino acid start and these small chains of the amino acids are pushed into the space of RER. When a complete protein is formed, the rough endoplasmic reticulum packs it in a vesicle and pinches off. This vesicle is further modified by the Golgi apparatus.
